The Mother – Son duo who are stealing the hearts all over; ‘Rahel Makan Kora’ Review

A KSRTC Bus, a mother, a son, his lover, her family, their dear dearest natives and close friends in a small town. This is the premise of the latest family drama hit ‘Rahel Makan Kora’. This is a finely well-written, well-presented rustic family drama which reminisces the classic family hits in Malayalam Cinema. The film offers combined emotions of lots of romance, humour, and family emotions all together packaged into a perfect feel-good experience. The movie is also a social drama which explores the lives of M Panel conductors in Public Transport Services in Kerala and their professional as well as political challenges. The realistic storytelling through the lives of widowed mothers and the challenges they and their children suffer throughout their lives in a conventional Kerala society are all told in a very impactful and highly relatable manner.

The first scene of the movie starts inside a KSRTC Bus. Gouthami is an M Panel conductor. Kora is the newly recruited junior M Panel conductor through PSC who came to train under Gouthami. കെഎസ്ആ‍ർടിസിയിൽ ജോലി ലഭിച്ചതോടെ. Kora and his mother Rahel hail from Pala, they have settled in Alappuzha as part of Kora’s new government job surprisingly in the neighbourhood of Gouthami’s home itself. Both Gouthami and Kora lost their fathers in their childhood itself. These realizations and slowly growing bond leads them to fall in love with each other. The film also shows the unique viewpoints about the life of the people who grew up without having their father’s guidance throughout their life.

Anson Paul who is popular through movies like Abrahaminte Santhathikal, Aadu 2, and Remo is playing the lead role of Kora. The actress who played the role of Gouthami is Merin Philip. Their chemistry as a romantic pair is the highlight of the movie. Sminu Sijo who is popular for movies like Jo & Jo, Janaki Jaane, etc. is playing the title role of Kora’s mother Rahel. On the performance front, Sminu’s super energetic mother character is the show stealer of the movie. Her funny combination scenes with Anson Paul are the heart of the movie. Althaf Salim as Bheeman, played a funny local politician and Vijayakumar played the role of Kariachan, the humorous brother character of Rahel and the uncle of Kora.

The director behind this fun drama movie is Ubaini. This is the debut directorial of Ubaini, who served in the industry as an assistant director since 2010 and also as Chief Associate Director from ‘Oru Mexican Aparatha’ to ‘Pathonpatham Noottandu’. Baby Edathua has penned down the story, screenplay and dialogues of ‘Rahel Makan Kora’. Kailas is the music director of the movie and Shiji Jayadevan handled the cinematography of the movie.

Shaji K George produced Rahel Makan Kora under the production banner SKG Films. Manu Pillai, Resmi Anil, Tom Emmatty and a couple of debutants are doing the other notable roles. Even though this is a family drama, the movie is well-designed for audiences of all ages without a bit of boredom at any point. The film predominantly offers a perfect theatrical experience with the family which is nowadays a rarity in Malayalam Cinema bombarded with the huge amount of muted dialogues, drug abuse scenes, profanity, etc., whether the script demands it or not!
